What do you believe is the purpose of a college education?
I believe the purpose of a college education is to prepare us for the real world. We need to get used to a daily routine of work for the rest of our lives. I think college is about more than just educating us in a scholarly way, but more about educating us personally through our experiences while being in college. It helps us learn to control procrastination, keep our priorities straight, and accept the belief that hard work does pay off. Though it can be very stressful, in the end when we're getting our degrees, we will appreciate every bit of it. The late nights studying, sitting in your dorm room for hours getting homework done, etc. Though it seems like a pain now, we'll appreciate it all when it's over. We'll be ready to go in the real world, get a career, start a family. I think that getting a college education is extremely important no a days in order to get somewhere and be something as you grow up. Depending on the job you hope to acquire down the road, a college degree is a must for most business to even consider you as a future employee. College is also a good pre requirement before getting a job because it helps inform you of what the career you want is all about and realize if it really is right for you or not. You don't want to get stuck doing anything less than what you love for the rest of your life.
What does it mean to be educated?
To me, being educated can be taken in a number of different ways. Some people are educated in a scholarly sense, while others are educated with common sense in their day to day lives. I think that being educated in general is being able to know what to do in a situation and act on it. Being educated is learning from past experiences and acting on them in future ones. I think it's about living and learning to better yourself for the future. In a scholarly sense, I think being educated means you prepare yourself of basic knowledge of different subjects in order to chose your own individual life path. It prepares you for a family and gives you intellectual and morals to give social instruction to others, such as your children, friends, or family.
What experiences have you had with education that led you to this belief?
My beliefs are based on different things I've went through individually. In high school, I learned that education is very important and needs to be taken seriously. Before then I never really tried hard in school and thought it was a breeze and waste of time. As I've grown up, I have learned that education plays a huge role in making me the person I want to be. I've had to chose right from wrong and learn what is most important to me. I have went through hard times and had to figure out what I will deal with or not put up with. I've had to learn control with spending money and surrounding myself with the right people to keep me on the right track and my priorities straight forward in helping me grow and succeed. I think through all my experiences, they have helped me grow and educated me with what life is really about and more importantly, how to deal with what life throws at me.
